How Much Time Do You Have To Sign A Severance Agreement?
If you were just handed a severance agreement, here’s the first thing to know: you probably don’t have to sign it right away.
In California, how long you get depends on your age. If you’re under 40, state law gives you a min. of 5 business days to decide. If you’re 40 or older, federal law gives you at least 21 days — or 45 in a group layoff — plus 7 more days to change your mind after you sign.
The pressure to “sign by Friday” is often just pressure.
What you sign away is usually permanent. The time you’re given is not a suggestion — it’s your right. Use it.
